Our Factory non è solo un tributo alla factory di Andy Wahrol e dei Velvet Undergroud. Se con il passare del tempo anche l’orizzonte temporale degli standard si posta – qui siamo tra il 1965 e il 1972 – il lavoro di Piero Frassi, Dimitri Grechi Espinoza Michael Baker, Gabriele Evangelista e Claudia Tellini va oltre una rilettura in chiave jazz di “Sunday Morning”, “Femme Fatale” e “Take a walk on the wild side”.
“Our Factory” è un progetto che inizia con l’occasione di una Conferenza-concerto per Palazzo Blu, Fondazione Pisa, nell’ambito di una mostra sulle opere di Andy Warhol, nella New York della sua Factory. Da questo primo passo di Piero Frassi e Dimitri Grechi Espinoza e dal riascolto dei brani presentati in quell’occasione nascono anche i brani originali ispirati alla scena musicale di New York di quegli anni e alle immagini prodotte da Warhol: “Minor Reflections “ (Dimitri Grechi Espinoza), “ Landing”, “ Mistery”, “ Reflective Paintings”’ ”After the Rain “(Piero Frassi), “Hat” (Gabriele Evangelista).
Registrato in una sola seduta, “Our Factory” coglie l’attimo in cui l’espressione musicale prende corpo, accettando in toto i rischi e le sfide dello specifico jazz.
I ritmi di Michael Baker guidano le composizioni attraverso i diversi colori e stati d’animo del mondo espressivo della Factory Warholiana, così come la voce di Claudia Tellini è elemento chiave della rilettura delle cover e con “Ask me now” ( Thelonious Monk, 1965) chiude con un aperto richiamo alla scena jazz newyorkese di quegli anni. Perché i mondi, allora come ora, si incrociano e si scambiano.
Our Factory isn’t just a tribute to Andy Wahrol’s and The Velvet Underground’s Factory, between 1965 and 1972. The time-frame of the standards is fluid and so is the work of Piero Frassi, Dimitri Grichi Espinoza, Michael Baker, Gabriele Evangelista, Claudia Tellini, going beyond a mere “jazzy” rereading of “Sunday Morning”, “Femme Fatale” and “Take a walk on the wild side”.
The “Our Factory” project began with a concert and conference at Palazzo Blu, Fondazione Pisa, within an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s Factory works.
This was the first step, for Piero Frassi and Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, to composing original pieces, inspired by the scene of 1970s New York scene and Wahrol’s iconic works: “Minor Reflections“ (Dimitri Grechi Espinoza), “Landing”, “Mistery”, “Reflective Paintings”, ”After the Rain“ (Piero Frassi), “Hat” (Gabriele Evangelista).
Having been recorded in a single session, “Our Factory” seizes the moment when music comes alive, and accepts all the risks and the challenges of jazz music.
Michael Baker’s rhythms guide the compositions through the different colors and moods characteristic of the warholian Factory. The voice of Claudia Tellini is the key that unlocks the the heart of these cover versions, and with “Ask Me Now” (Thelonious Monk, 1965) the album encloses an open recall to the jazz scene of those years in New York. Because – then and now – different worlds are always crossing and inspiring each other.
